Students celebrate a first-place win for building the most cost-efficient, energy-efficient, and attractive home, featuring Pvilion's storm shutters!
Pvilion designed, manufactured, and installed storm shutters for the SURE House, Stevens' entirely solar-powered house. Inspired by hurricane Sandy, the home is completely sustainable and can withstand the challenges of coastal living. Engineered to be accommodating in beautiful summer weather, and safe during extreme weather events, SURE House is equipped with Pvilion’s storm shutters. On a sunny day, the shutters are raised to serve as an extension of the roof and shade the home. During intense weather, hydraulic pistons lower the shutters into a rubber seal where they are locked into place to provide a water-resistant seal all around the home. The upper portion of the shutters are fashioned with thin and flexible photovoltaic solar cells that generate power when the shutters are raised. The panels are also very durable, even when lowered and subject to debris in flood waters. The shutters scored a perfect 100% performance in domestic hot water demand.
