120 year-old Austrian jeweler, Swarovski, partnered with wearable tech company, Misfit, to design a crystal, solar-powered activity tracker. Clearly, the result is stunning. However, the project was challenging.
Wearable technology is difficult to reliably power. Typically, users have to charge their batteries often, and sometimes need to swap them out entirely. Swarovski and Misfit were able to design the tracker with violet crystals in such a way that the gems harness and concentrate light, directing rays to a small solar cell underneath it (the violet color intensifies the light). What's more incredible is that the tracker only requires 10-15 minutes of sun exposure every few days.
What beautiful, functional design!
