New year, new goals! In late 2015, Governor Cuomo ordered regulators to draft a mandate for 50% renewable energy for electricity for 2030.
Specific targets for the 2030 goal have yet to be announced, however, this is a strong endorsement of solar energy, the leading renewable resource in New York. The state had the 7th largest solar market in 2014, the success of which is owed to numerous small-scale (2 megawatts or less) projects. With the possibility of nuclear plants being shut down, there is a potential for the solar energy industry to rise to even greater success.
Once this goal is put into action, New York will be on-par with California and Hawaii as the top three states for renewable energy objectives.
